Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)

What does the procedure involve?

Brachioplasty, also known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and fat from the inner arms, improving their shape and firmness. It is particularly suitable for people with significant skin laxity, whether due to substantial weight loss, the ageing process or genetic factors. When the skin has lost its elasticity, neither exercise nor non-surgical treatments are usually sufficient to correct the problem.

During the initial assessment, the most important factors are the quality of your skin, the amount of excess skin and fat, and your expectations. In mild cases, liposuction alone may be sufficient, but when there is significant skin laxity, brachioplasty offers the most effective and long-lasting results.

The surgery is performed in an operating theatre, usually under general anaesthetic. Before the procedure, I make markings on the skin to guide the precise and safe removal of excess tissue. During the operation, the excess skin is removed and liposuction is usually performed at the same time to improve the overall contour. The tissues are then tightened and the skin is carefully closed to create a more streamlined and harmonious appearance of the arms.

The scar is an important aspect that I always explain in detail. It is usually located along the inner arm, extending from the armpit towards the elbow, so that it is as discreet as possible when the arms are at rest. It is a permanent scar which will usually improve in appearance over time, but it will not disappear completely. In people with localised skin laxity, the scar may be limited to the armpit.

After surgery, it is common to experience swelling, tightness and moderate discomfort, which can usually be well controlled with the prescribed medication. In some cases, temporary drains are placed to prevent fluid from accumulating and are removed after a few days. You will wear a compression garment for several weeks, which is essential to support healing and help achieve the best possible final result.

As a surgeon, my aim is to provide you with all the information you need to make a calm and well-informed decision. Brachioplasty can significantly improve the shape of the arms and, as a result, your comfort and confidence, provided it is performed with realistic expectations and appropriate follow-up care. If you wish, I would be delighted to assess your case on an individual basis and answer any questions you may have.
