Breast augmentation is a gender-affirming procedure aimed at helping a trans woman’s body look and feel more aligned with her gender identity. It involves the placement of breast implants, generally made of silicone, to increase breast volume and create a feminine breast shape.
Many trans women undergo hormone therapy with oestrogen, which can lead to breast development. However, in some people, this growth is limited or does not achieve the desired size or shape. In these cases, breast augmentation may be an option to:
Available medical studies consistently show that this surgery is associated with high levels of satisfaction, both with body image and personal appearance, as well as an overall improvement in wellbeing. If the trans woman is undergoing hormone therapy, it is advisable for hormone treatment to have reached a stable level for at least 6 months before surgery.
A shared decision-making process is essential, taking into account each patient's individual goals, expectations and personal circumstances.
Duration: 1 to 2 hours.
Anaesthesia: The procedure is performed in an operating theatre under general anaesthesia.
Hospital stay: A short hospital stay is usually required, allowing the patient to return home the following day.
Following surgery, it is common to experience swelling, bruising, and tenderness in the breasts. Although not usually necessary, in some cases drains may need to be left in place for the first 24–72 hours. During the first week, you will need to take antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication and keep your arms rested, although you will be able to walk. For the first month, you will wear a special supportive bra both day and night to help prevent the implants from moving out of position.
